And what role does smart technology play in city governance? These questions are central to the Erasmus Initiative ‘Vital Cities and Citizens’. We are investigating the conditions that are essential for a city when it comes to equality, safety, sustainability and harmonious coexistence.

Vital Cities and Citizens in a nutshell

  • With fifteen researchers from various disciplines – such as psychology, sociology, public administration, educational sciences, communication, and art and culture – we bring together a wide range of perspectives.
  • We conduct research in collaboration with residents, local authorities, community organisations and initiatives.
  • Together, we learn and develop knowledge that is scientifically grounded, yet practical and meaningful in real-world applications.
  • Together, we are committed to improving the quality of life in cities.

Wijkwijs: by and for residents

Wijkwijs is a programme in which local residents, together with researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of Technology, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and Erasmus Medical Centre, work in various neighbourhoods to develop knowledge aimed at better understanding and tackling local issues.

Wijkwijs was established and is funded by the Vital Cities and Citizens and Resilient Delta initiatives.
