The Library supports faculties and research groups at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) in collecting bibliometric data for purposes such as research evaluations. The Library helps you as a researcher to map the impact of your research and make your scientific publications more visible.

What is Research Intelligence?

Research intelligence is the use of data and analyses (such as bibliometrics and altmetrics) to gain insight into the impact, quality, and visibility of scientific research. These analyses help faculties and researchers to

• analyze publication performance;
• map research collaborations;
• make strategic decisions.

What is the difference between bibliometrics and altmetrics?

• Bibliometrics analyses citations in scientific literature.
• Altmetrics measure online attention, such as policy documents, social media, and news.

Responsible use of metrics

• Promoting the responsible use of metrics-based research evaluations and analyses.

Bibliometric analyses

• Support with bibliometric analyses for research evaluations and grant applications.
• Support with bibliometric analyses for (re)appointments, tenures, and PhDs.

Visibility of EUR

• Advice on improving the visibility of EUR in databases such as Scopus and Web of Science.

Tools and interpretation

• Support with the use of SciVal for analysing and visualizing research performance, and Altmetric Explorer for online exposure of publications.

Metrics and indicators

• Advice on finding and applying bibliometric indicators for your scientific output (best practices).

Visibility and author identifiers

• Advice on increasing your visibility in academic databases, including through the use of author identifiers such as ORCID iD.

Training, modules, and tools

• Online modules and workshops, such as Research Impacts: a LibGuide on the three most used databases for measuring research impact (Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar).
• Support in using SciVal, a bibliometric tool for analysing and visualizing research performance, and Altmetric Explorer for analysing online attention for publications.
• Advice on bibliometric analyses as part of your research, for example using VOSviewer.

• Scopus (Elsevier) – publications and citations.
• Web of Science (Clarimate) – publications and citations.
• SciVal – strategic research analysis based on Scopus data
• Altmetric Explorer – measuring online attention for scientific publications
• Dimensions – publications and citations
• Pure – Research Information System (CRIS) of EUR and Erasmus MC.
• ORCID – unique researcher identification.

Responsible use of research indicators

The Library attaches great importance to the responsible use of research indicators. Bibliometric indicators and altmetrics can support research evaluations, but never provide the complete picture. Therefore:

• We work according to the ten principles of the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics.
• We advise on how metrics can be used in a transparent, context-sensitive, and fair manner.
