ORCID

Enhance the discoverability and visibility of your research

Having an ORCID record enhances the discoverability and visibility of you as a researcher and your research throughout your academic career regardless of your affiliation. It is a free, easy-to-use, online profile that you own and control, where you can gather all your professional affiliations, research outputs, and activities in one place. An ORCID record makes it easy to publish and gain recognition for your work as a researcher or peer reviewer. An ORCID iD can also make it much easier to submit manuscripts and to apply for funding, now and in the future.

You can use ORCID in many different ways, such as displaying your peer review work or having your ORCID record automatically updated with publications in Pure or by Crossref on behalf of publishers. Using your 16-digit ORCID iD in manuscript submission systems ensures correct attribution no matter how many people have the same (or similar) name. ORCID links all your affiliations, funding, publications and other contributions, awards, editorships, etc. You control access to and visibility of every piece of your data.

ORCID's benefits include:

Personal names are often not unique and may change over time. Additionally, a researcher’s name can appear in systems as:

  • Different variants (e.g. Sofia Maria Hernandez Garcia, S.M.H. Garcia, Sofia Maria Garcia);
  • Spelled with diacritics (Müller, Mueller, Muller);
  • Names can appear in different writing systems (王, Wang).

ORCID prevents name ambiguity problems by providing a unique digital identifier that distinguishes you from other researchers.

Linking your research publications to your ORCID iD increases the discoverability of you as a researcher and your professional activities. Databases – such as Web of Science and Scopus – further enhance this visibility when you connect their author systems to your identifier.

ORCID’s vision (linken) is “a world where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time”.

ORCID functions independently, regardless of institution and/or country. A single ORCID iD therefore collects and showcases your linked outputs throughout the entirety of your career.

ORCID is a not-for-profit, open, and community-driven organization,  regardless of institution and/or country, created for and by the research community.

ORCID generates automated linkages between your identifier and your professional activities. The system supports data found from a variety of different outlets and outputs – articles, datasets, peer-review activities, conference papers and more. Having your professional activities bundled in one central registry allows you to easily transfer your research activities to new institutions and/or organizations.

To comply with FAIR principles, ORCID is increasingly being integrated into the workflows of publishers, research institutions and grant makers. For example, an ORCID iD is used in manuscript submission and/or peer review and grant applications, among other things.

Erasmus  Library ORCID Team

The Erasmus Library ORCID Team supports researchers in creating and using their ORCID iD and ORCID record.

The EUR ORCID LIbGuide contains practical information about creating an ORCID iD, adding publication data and other information to your ORCID record, and using your ORCID iD in other systems.

You can link your Pure profile to your ORCID record. When you give permission, new publications in the Pure repository are automatically added to your ORCID record. More information can be found in the EUR ORCID LibGuide.
