Student wellbeing over time and across subgroups: A network and mixed-effects analysis of 6511 university students in the Netherlands
Preprint, OSF Preprints, 2026This study examines student wellbeing across four academic years (2020–2024), using data from 6,511 students at Erasmus University Rotterdam. It explores differences in wellbeing between student subgroups and over time, and uses network analyses to examine the relationships between different aspects of wellbeing and mental health. The findings show that wellbeing improved after 2020, while inequalities between student groups persisted.
Effectiveness and uptake of ROOM to grow: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial

This study describes the development of ROOM to Grow, a mobile intervention designed to support university students’ wellbeing. Using a human-centred and iterative design approach, the study explores how students and other stakeholders were involved in developing the intervention. ROOM to Grow focuses on emotion regulation and self-awareness and combines brief exercises from different psychological approaches, including mindfulness, self-compassion, positive psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy and ACT.

This study focuses on optimizing ROOM, a mobile intervention designed to support university students in developing adaptive emotion regulation skills. Using a micro-randomized trial and student interviews, the researchers examined which exercises and intervention components contribute to changes in positive and negative emotions and how students experience the intervention. The results showed that engaging with the exercises was associated with increased positive and decreased negative emotional states. These insights were used to further optimize the content and personalization of ROOM.
