EUR is measuring the occupancy and utilisation of eleven lecture rooms in a pilot. Using sensors we can see how many people enter and leave the lecture rooms. This data is then compared with the scheduling program TimeEdit. With this pilot we examine whether the measurements can help in optimal use of space.
The first phase of the pilot was completed on 31 March 2024. Phase 2 of this pilot will start from 1 September 2025. For two years, PLEQ's sensors measure and analyse occupancy and utilisation.
What is being measured?
The pilot is taking place in several lecture rooms. You will soon read which ones these are.
The sensors are from the supplier PLEQ and measure the following data:
- Occupancy: whether there is anyone in the room
- Traffic: number of people entering and leaving the room
- Utilisation: a combination of occupancy and traffic
- To which room the sensor is connected
- Date and time
Why are we doing this?
We will use the results of the pilot to see whether we want to structurally measure the occupancy and utilization of teaching rooms using sensor technology. The pilot is part of the Smart Campus project of the Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics (ECDA). In the Smart Campus Project real-life data will be used to make campus Woudestein more livable and sustainable.
Part of the project is to experiment with the use of sensors to collect data on air pollution, indoor climate, people flows and heat distribution. In combination with other anonymized data about campus users and existing campus systems, issues will be addressed related to use of buildings and facilities, overall campus sustainability and health and wellbeing.
The pilot is set up and carried out by the ECDA and the departments Erasmus Digitalisation & Information Services, Education & Student Affairs and Real Estate & Facilities.
Privacy
This pilot complies with the rules of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The data collected with the sensors cannot be traced back to individuals. No images are stored, and no personal data is retained.
