We all move around the city everyday without thinking too much about traffic lights, surveillance cameras, and other ‘data-collectors’ that keep track of what we do. Nonetheless, we are constantly being monitored. But how are we being monitored? For what purpose? How should we feel about this? And how does it affect our society?

During this Datawalk, Maartje Bijleveld will guide us through the center of Rotterdam to make these practices visible and map out where data flows take place in our city. We are all aware of surveillance cameras, but the sensors that collect data are often hidden away in unassuming grey boxes or buildings. Maartje will show us where they are, how to spot them, and what they are actually used for. You might be surprised about how much data is being collected on you everyday!
Maartje Bijleveld is a Master Student Media Studies at Erasmus School of History, Culture, and Communication and has experience with guiding Datawalks in different cities in the Netherlands. She is currently researching the topic of data and the city as part of her Master Thesis.
SG Playground is your opportunity to share your skills and knowledge. We offer EUR students and PhD-researchers support in organizing their own workshops, lectures or other events. Do you have an idea for an event? Fill in the form!
