Piet Dieleman - Systems in Structure

Art work of Piet Dieleman, coloured flowers on a white background.

From January 4 to April 15, 2026, the Erasmus Gallery will present a solo exhibition of artworks by artist Piet Dieleman (born 1956). Dieleman's work explores the tension between freedom and regulation, emotion and structure; themes that are also central to education and research. For students, staff, and visitors, the exhibition offers an inspiring encounter with art that draws parallels with academic systems and methods.

Add to calendar

In addition to the exhibition, forty monoprints from the Herbarium series, from the EUR Art Collection, will be on permanent display in Langeveld Building from mid-March 2026. The presence of Dieleman's work on campus emphasises the role of art as a source of reflection and dialogue within the university community.

Educational explanation

Dieleman's work connects with questions also relevant at Erasmus University: how do we organize knowledge, and how do we relate to the structures we create ourselves?

  • Repetition and variation: students recognize research methods in this, where patterns only gain meaning through detail;
  • Logic and intuition: staff see parallels with the balance between analytical models and creative insights;
  • Delay in visual culture: visitors experience how art can encourage reflection, especially in an environment where information circulates rapidly.

The exhibition and the permanent Herbarium series on the Woudestein campus make art an integral part of the university experience.
