Get to know yourself

Step 1 in choosing the right study programme
Two prospective students sit next to each other in a lecture hall while looking at the camera.

The first step in choosing a study programme is knowing yourself. Before you start researching the countless possibilities, it is important to consider who you are and what you want. But that is easier said than done.

First, ask yourself the following questions and get to know yourself better

What do I know?

What knowledge do I have? What do I like to read about? What do I know a lot about?

What can I do?

What skills do I have? What am I good at?

What do I want?

What things are important to me? What do I enjoy doing? What makes me angry?

Who am I?

What are my standards and values? What character traits do I have?

Tip: let someone else fill in the questions about you

Do you find it difficult to answer these questions? Ask someone who knows you well (e.g. your parents, a good friend or your mentor) to fill in the questions for you and then discuss it together.
