We ask this question as this award is designed for students from ‘a non-Western background'. Currently, ECHO describes it as follows: For the definition of ‘non-Western’, ECHO relies on the framework established by Statistics Netherlands (CBS): “A person whose migration background is one of the countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia (excluding Indonesia and Japan) or Turkey.” Because CBS bases its definition on a socio-economic approach and ECHO’s work is based on a social approach within the Dutch context, ECHO has chosen to include Indonesia and Japan within the “non-Western” framework. For more frameworks and concepts, ECHO refers to the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC). This is a platform where (education) professionals and students can go for knowledge and inspiration in the field of diversity and inclusion in education.
