Econometrics student Jip Flinterman has been awarded a scholarship by Erasmus School of Economics alumnus Mr. Dick Verbeek, enabling him to attend an intensive three-week undergraduate summer course in Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Mr. Verbeek, who graduated from Erasmus School of Economics in 1975, has supported talented economics students through scholarships for many years. During his distinguished international career, he spent two decades leading European operations at Aon, one of the world’s leading providers of risk management, insurance brokerage, and consulting services.
Recognising academic excellence
Jip Flinterman has been enrolled in the Bachelor programme in Econometrics and Operations Research since 2025. In addition, he is a member of the Bachelor Honours Class at Erasmus School of Economics, a selective programme designed for the School’s highest-achieving and most dedicated students. The Bachelor Honours Class aims to deepen and broaden students’ economic knowledge, stimulate their personal development, and strengthen their academic and research skills through an enriched curriculum and extracurricular activities.
Building expertise in AI and Deep Learning
This August, Jip will participate in LSE’s summer course Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning. The programme provides students with a strong foundation in the principles and applications of modern AI systems, with a particular focus on deep neural networks.
During the course, Jip will develop and train deep learning models, including image classification systems and generative models such as autoencoders. Through hands-on laboratory sessions, he will use Python and PyTorch to build models from scratch, analyse their performance, and implement improvements. Upon completion of the programme, Jip will be able to design, train, and critically evaluate deep learning models for a variety of predictive and generative tasks. Beyond learning to use existing AI tools, he will gain the knowledge and confidence to customise, assess, and further develop AI systems for future academic research and professional projects.
