On Tuesday, September 22nd, the official opening of the portrait gallery Professors Represented took place at campus Woudestein of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). Several professors featured in the portraits, along with colleagues, students and partners, celebrated the completion of this project.
Last summer, the portrait gallery Professors Represented was expanded to include 48 new portraits of female professors. This brings the total number of portraits of female professors in the gallery to 120.
Prof. Jacco van Sterkenburg, Chief Diversity Officer at EUR: “Visibility matters. Representation matters. Role models matter. I am very proud of this portrait gallery, which showcases women in top academic positions. It forms part of our university’s commitment and wider efforts to highlight the many dimensions of diversity within the EUR community.”
During the official opening, speeches were given by Prof. Jacco van Sterkenburg, Chief Diversity Officer at EUR, Dr, Suzie Hermán, curator of special collections at the EUR University Library, and Prof. Annelien Bredenoord, Chair of the Executive Board at EUR.
About the portrait gallery
The portrait gallery is an initiative of IDEA Center (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access Center) at EUR and complements the portraits of (predominantly male) professors already on display on campus. Professors Represented consists of portraits of female professors at EUR between 2021 and 2025. All female professors from that period have been invited to take part.
The 120 portraits have been added to the heritage collection of Erasmus University Rotterdam.
