Eurekaweek 2026 marks the start of a new chapter for many students

No fewer than 3,200 first-year students attended the official opening of Eurekaweek 2026 at Ahoy on Monday 17 August. During the week, participants will be introduced to student life and discover what Rotterdam has to offer.

This year’s induction week is themed "Exceed All Odds". It marks the start of a new chapter full of opportunities and challenges. For many students, Eurekaweek is the start of an unforgettable experience. You’ll discover a new city, meet new people and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The future holds many opportunities

Eurekaweek began, as is traditional, with the Opening Ceremony and Campus Day. In her opening speech at Ahoy, Rector Magnificus Jantine Schuit emphasised that the brand-new students are starting their studies at a special moment in history. 'Artificial intelligence is changing how we learn and work. The future is changing rapidly — and no one knows exactly what it will look like. Some people see uncertainty. I see opportunity, and probably you do as well!' she said, encouraging the students.

Maassilo Shuffle and Cantus

A new addition to this year’s Eureka Week is the Maassilo Shuffle. Just like Rotterdam Roulette in recent years, it’s an evening packed with a variety of activities, with something for everyone. From parties and games to a pub quiz and a jazz café.

The difference lies in the venue. This year, all the activities are taking place at a single central venue – the Maassilo – rather than at various locations around the city. This makes it easy for students to switch between activities throughout the evening. The organisers hope this will make it easier for students to try out different activities and, above all, to do what they feel like doing.

As always, the Cantus is also on the programme – an event that has been a regular feature of Eurekaweek for many years. Thousands of students gather at Ahoy to sing, connect and experience a sense of brotherhood during the largest Cantus in the Netherlands.

In addition, student wellbeing hosts will be on hand throughout the week to lend a listening ear to students who need it.

A good start for all students

During Eurekaweek, students lay a solid foundation for their studies and their social life in Rotterdam. It is the beginning of a time full of new experiences and encounters. On 31 August, we warmly welcome all students to the Opening Academic Year, where we begin this new chapter together and officially kick off the 2026/2027 academic year.
