Erasmus Magazine (EM), our university’s independent news platform, has won two awards at the annual Kring Awards ceremony. Every year, these awards recognise the best journalistic work produced by higher education media in the categories of Background Story, Column and Photography. EM won in the categories of Best Background Story and Best Column.

Best Background Story

The prize for the best Background Story went to an article by EM editor Tessa Hofland. In her article, Hofland investigated why it has been virtually impossible for almost twenty years to remove underperforming medical students from their courses.

The jury praised Hofland for her "excellently written, socially relevant investigation" which "exposes a major problem facing medical schools throughout the Netherlands".

Award for best Column

Giselle Maria Timmers wrote the winning Column, entitled "Topless in a new-build kitchen". The jury praised Timmers for the relatability of her writing, its structure and her ability to weave a larger narrative from a small, everyday moment, with a "slightly melancholic" conclusion.

Editor-in-chief Wieneke Gunneweg is proud of the double win: 'These prizes are a huge recognition of all the energy and effort the team puts into good journalism.'
