If you read the news nowadays, the world seems to be on fire. The headlines follow each other so quickly that it is almost impossible to keep up! Time for a Current Affairs Lecture in which an expert will take a closer look at what is going on in the world. This time: a critical review on the current debates surrounding military conscription.
Across Europe, the question of military conscription has returned to the political agenda. Still, it remains a deeply controversial topic. In this Current Affairs Lecture, Dr. Sven Altenburger will examine the arguments both in favor of and against the drafting of civilians and place them in a broader perspective. Does conscription align with our democratic values? What is its effect on civil-military relations? And does it, in fact, make militaries stronger?
Sven Altenburger is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Political Theory at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. He holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Göttingen and has held visiting positions at the University of Chicago and the University of Exeter. His current research focusses on military institutions.
