Memories Tinbergen Building

Stories about this remarkable building
Campus Woudestein.

The renovation of Tinbergen Building is a key part of making the Woudestein campus more sustainable. The new design will provide the building with modern office and teaching facilities, plenty of good study spaces and catering facilities. The Tinbergen Building is set to (re)open in mid-2027.

During this extensive renovation, we’d like to share some memories of this building, which has been the beating heart of our campus since the 1960s. Back then, the building (formerly known as the H-block) was home to many occupants and hosted all sorts of special events.

Newlywed couple looking out from Tinbergen Building.
My wife and I lived together for some time on campus in a former staff residence, which has since been demolished. The campus therefore holds a special place for us. When we married in 2017, we took our wedding photographs on the 18th floor.

Circumzenital Arc.
On a clear day in early December 2016, I witnessed a rather remarkable natural phenomenon above the Tinbergen Building: a circumzenithal arc. Naturally, I had to capture it in a photograph. The sky smiles at Erasmus.

April Fools' Day prank

''An April Fools’ prank. The story went that, on a certain day, the letters (Erasmus’s signature) would be removed from the Tinbergen Building because it had been discovered that it was not his signature after all, but a forgery.'' (swipe to continue)

And of course, you cannot leave the namesake’s letters in place if they are not authentic. People were told that, if they wished to witness the removal, they could come and watch… But, of course, nothing happened: it was April Fools' Day!
