Y (Yuying) Hou

Biography

Yuying Hou is a PhD researcher in human geography at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her doctoral research examines children’s sensory geographies in Chinese urban villages, focusing on how children experience informal urban spaces through everyday mobility, spatial practices, and night-time life. Her work is concerned with children’s lived experiences and the ways they perceive, interpret, and negotiate their environments in contexts of urban transformation and migration.

Her research interests include children’s geographies, informal settlements, everyday life, migration, and sensory geography. She is particularly committed to child-centred research methods that foreground children’s voices, agency, and embodied ways of knowing. Through qualitative and participatory approaches, her work aims to better understand urban space from children’s own perspectives.
