PH (Phuong Hoan) Le, MSC MA

Biography

Phuong Hoan Le was a lecturer and part-time PhD candidate at the Department of Media and Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She holds a BA in History (Media & Culture track, with honours), an MA in Media Studies (Media & Business track, cum laude), and an MSc degree in Business Administration with the EUR Excellence Scholarship. 

Her PhD project, supervised by dr. Vidhi Chaudhri, dr. Yijing Wang, and prof. dr. Susanne Janssen, focused on the lived experiences of gig workers, such as freelancers, independent contractors, Airbnb hosts, Amazon Mechanical Turkers, Uber drivers, Deliveroo food deliverers, who make up an increasingly significant part of the (global) economy. More specifically, she investigated how and where gig workers experience identification, and in what ways contextual factors shape these experiences.

In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities at Erasmus University, Hoàn was actively involved in academic communities. She co-coordinated the Platform Labor Group and co-founded one of the largest research clusters at her faculty, Responsible Organizations: Communication, Change and Society (ROCCS). Additionally, she represented PhDs as a member of the PhD Council of the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities, coordinated the ESHCC PhD Club blog, and helped bridge the gap between scientists and the broader public through the university's Wetenschapscafé.

Before joining this department, she taught Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam, was elected Student and Early Career Representative (2017-2018) for the Public Relations Division of the International Communication Association (ICA), and provided workshops at vocational universities, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and other tech companies.
