At EUR, we are committed to engaging with AI responsibly. We follow the principles of Responsible AI by Design, embedding ethics, fairness, transparency, and human values throughout the entire AI lifecycle—from concept and development to implementation and beyond. Responsibility is built in from the start, not added afterward.
EUR and AI
AI offers many benefits, but also entails risks, to address this, the European Union introduced the AI Act, which sets rules for the responsible use of AI.
Erasmus University Rotterdam complies with these regulations and applies additional guidelines grounded in Erasmus values. We aim to meet legal requirements, uphold academic integrity, encourage innovation, and stay true to our core values.
How do you meet the requirements of the AI Act?
A key requirement of the AI Act is that everyone in the organisation has sufficient knowledge of AI (AI literacy) and can recognise and distinguish AI systems.
Make sure you become familiar with the basic principles of the AI Act by:
- Carefully reviewing the MyEUR page and the EUR infographic on the AI Act and Responsible AI use
- Learning to recognise and distinguish various AI systems, and understanding which are prohibited, high-risk, and which are allowed.
- Get in touch via the 'Responsible AI' MyEUR page: How to take AI-related action at EUR. If you have any doubts or questions about AI systems, or if you plan to use, purchase, or develop an AI system at EUR.
The AI Act and Scientific Research
The European Union’s AI Act includes a specific exemption for scientific research, designed to protect innovation and academic freedom without requiring researchers to comply with all the obligations of the law directly.
This exemption applies to AI systems that are specifically developed and used for scientific research and scientific development within a closed research environment
